H1 Media Opps Update: Struggling La Quinta moves media, creative still in play?

Update (9/19): La Quinta, formerly No. 576 in the Horizon, LA, after a review.

Adweek reports that Horizon will begin working on the account in January for a campaign promoting La Quinta to business travelers seeking select service options. However, we've heard Horizon would actually take over by the end of October. Either way, now's the time for sellers to start making introductions for 2017 RFPs. We'll keep you posted as we locate Horizon staff who transitioned to the La Quinta account.

There's no word on where creative has moved, if anywhere yet, so ad agencies should keep going after this work (more info below).

Opportunity: We've learned that Buntin Group is still out-of-home AOR, but it's certainly vulnerable now, as well.

Focus your pitch on recently appointed marketing lieutenants such as Vicki Cutwright, VP of consumer insights and analytics, and David Sims, VP of loyalty marketing (research here), along with Julie Cary, CMO since 2006. She's still there, but you have to wonder how many nights she has left in her stay.  CFO Keith Cliene was appointed CEO in February, and soon after, Hyatt veteran John Cantele was named COO. New executive hires at a struggling brand with low advertising ROI is usually never a good sign for long-tenured CMOs and their agency roster. 

Sellers - La Quinta's ad spending has up the last year, but expected ROI can't be there based on continued declines in occupancy and

Advertising Spend: For the six months ended June 30, La Quinta spent $40.3 million on marketing, promotional and advertising expenses, up 6.6% from $37.8 million during the prior year period. Much of the increase stems from higher spending on broadcast and digital ads designed to increase brand awareness and bookings, according to documentsfiled with the SEC.

TV Breakdown: Since January, $13.9 million has gone to national TV ads (see targeting right), up from almost $11 million over the same period a year earlier, iSpot.tv reports.

Digital Breakdown: Meanwhile, La Quinta's video display presence has plummeted this year, according toPathmatics. This year, $593,500 has been spent spend on 21.3 million video impressions, a huge drop from $5.5 million for $165.6 impressions in 2015. Most of these impressions were bought site-direct from espn.com. Youtube and cbssports.com also make up a substantial part of the mix.

Desktop activity has remained almost flat, at about $5.8 million for 1.9 billion impressions, 89% of which were purchased through ad networks Google Adx + Adsense and Advertising.com. Ads are running on a wide mix of sites, led by answers.com, youtube.com, wunderground.com, aol.com and mapquest.com (really?). 

About $232,000 has been allocated for 99.6 million mobile impressions. They were almost all purchased through the same ad networks are running on many of the same desktop partners.
