Ritz-Carlton hotelier appoints new CMO

The Story
One week after luxury hotel company The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company named a new president and chief operating officer, it has appointed a new chief sales and marketing officer, according to the company.
Chris Gabaldon, a marketing and sales executive with 20 years of experience at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company and Marriott International, takes on this new function after most recently serving as The Ritz-Carlton’s vice president of sales.
Previously, he held the positions of VP of sales strategy and support at the Chevy Chase, Md.-based hotel company and senior director of sales strategy and support at Marriott International, The Ritz-Carlton’s parent company.
The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, with 70 locations in 24 countries, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Marriott International, one of the world’s top hoteliers, with 3,400 owned or franchised properties in more than 65 countries. In addition to The Ritz-Carlton, Marriott’s portfolio includes full-service brands like Renaissance Hotels and Marriott Hotels & Resorts and select-service brands such as Courtyard and Fairfield Inn.
The Research
Gabaldon is now tasked with increased sales and marketing responsibilities, in addition to directing The Ritz-Carlton’s revenue-management and eCommerce initiatives.
He will also play a critical role as new President and COO Herve Humler’s strategic business advisor, while driving top-line revenue for The Ritz-Carlton brand and providing direct leadership to its global sales operations.
“I am pleased to add Chris Gabaldon to my senior leadership team,” Humler said in a company release. “His record of success and strategic marketing has proven a major asset to The Ritz-Carlton.”
Humler, one of The Ritz-Carlton’s original founders in 1983, took on his new function after Simon Cooper was named Marriott International’s new president and managing director for Asia Pacific.
After serving in several senior positions including global chief operations officer, Humler will report to Marriott International Group President Robert McCarthy as he oversees The Ritz-Carlton’s entire portfolio, including the opening of more than 30 new hotel and residential projects that are currently underway.
“Herve is a true international hotelier with more than 35 years in the luxury lodging business and has helped to build The Ritz-Carlton into a world-class brand, “McCarthy said in a statement. “We feel most fortunate to have Herve in this position of increased responsibility where he can continue to provide his strong leadership to this iconic brand.”
Cooper’s promotion comes after nine years of successfully growing The Ritz-Carlton in both number of locations and revenue. Reporting to Arne Sorenson, president and COO of Marriott International, his responsibilities now include the operating performance and growth of the Asia Pacific region, in which there are more than 130 properties and 70 hotels.
Sorenson added in a company release that Cooper brings deep knowledge of the emerging markets in Asia Pacific, based on the recent growth of The Ritz-Carlton in the region.
“Under his leadership, we achieved a major expansion of The Ritz-Carlton brand around the world and most recently positioned it for future growth through the leverage of our company’s global support platform,” Sorenson said.
Marriott’s luxury JW Marriott brand has also performed well in Asia Pacific, with plans to grow in the region even future (WinmoEdge article).
According to The List database, The Ritz-Carlton contracts El Segundo, Calif.-based Team One Advertising as its agency of record for advertising and media buying and planning, while New York-based The Morris & King Company handles it public relations.
The Nielsen Company reported that The Ritz-Carlton spent $5.6 million on measured media in 2009. About $1.7 million was spent on local newspaper ads, about $1.3 million was spent on national newspaper ads and about $850,000 was spent on national magazine ads.
