Green has been with Southwest for almost 10 years, so we don’t expect major strategy and budget changes out of the gate. However, promotions are always a great excuse to engage decision makers, particularly ones who have been in their roles for longer than the average

Experience: Green has been with Southwest for 14 years, most recently as managing director of customer strategy and development. During his tenure, Green launched Rapid Rewards A-List, he frequent flyer program’s tiered status level; led the development and launch of the Southwest gift card; helped relaunch the Rapid Rewards program in 2011; and laid the groundwork for numerous inflight experience enhancements, according to a statement.

Media Spend: Southwest spent $61.9 million on measured media through the first half of 2015 and about $140 million for all of 2014. This is down from the $208.8 million allocated in 2013, according to Kantar Media.

National TV makes up more than half Southwest’s ad budget. The other half centers mostly on spot and cable TV, national magazine and national radio ads.

TV Breakdown: Last year, $96.5 million went to national TV ads, up from $68.6 million in 2014, according to Both years, ad activity was highest Oct.-Jan. and March-April saw a spike. 

Digital Breakdown: Based on its $100 million+ ad budget Southwest doesn’t run a lot of display, but it still boasts high share of voice compared to rivals. For example, last year Delta slightly edged Southwest in SOV and both ran much more display than American Airlines and United Airlines, Moat reports.

For 2015, Southwest ran 23 standard ads on almost 950 publishers (1% mobile), 87% of which were placed programmatically versus site direct. Travel sites, specifically, made up most of this activity, followed by news and entertainment publishers. Top sites were,,,,, and, according to Moat.
