New prez, COO for Atlas Van Lines

The Story
Transportation company Atlas Van Lines Inc. has named Jack Griffin to serve as its new president and chief operating officer, according to Inside Indiana Business.
Griffin was most recently president and COO of AWG International Inc., parent company of Atlas World Group’s international companies. He has more than 15 years of industry experience, having previously served in a number of senior management roles before Atlas.
He has served as senior vice president of business development at Bekins Van Lines, as was also vice president of network development at Allied Van Lines. Additionally, Griffin was VP of sales, marketing and agency development at Allied International.
Griffin is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, and also has served with the Household Goods Forwarders Association of America and the American Moving and Storage Association.
“Jack has done excellent work for Atlas with our three international business units, and he will apply that same expertise to our domestic van line business,” Atlas World Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Glen Dunkerson said in a company release. “His experience has given him both a global perspective on our industry as well as an intimate knowledge of its nuts and bolts.”
Based in Evansville, Ind., Atlas Van Lines is the largest subsidiary of Atlas World Group. The company provides employee relocation services as well as transportation of household goods. The company serves the United States and Canada.
The Research
Griffin’s new role at Atlas Van Lines isn’t effective until Jan. 1. Dunkerson gave WinmoEdge more details on the exec’s new role.
Dunkerson said that Griffin is going to be working with Atlas Van Lines’ network of more than 500 agents and its customers to promote the company’s solid performance and value.
“Jack will also be looking for a key person to head our sales and marketing efforts for our company,” he added.
Griffin’s primary day-to-day responsibilities are associated with the company’s van line business, Dunkerson said.
“He will work with our key professional staff in the areas of operations, sales, customer service, safety and fleet administration and revenue distribution to maintain a few of the more prominent departments,” he said.
Additionally, Griffin will also play a key role in assisting Atlas Van Lines’ agents in customer service.
One of the company’s near-term goals is assisting Atlas Van Lines agents and professional van operators in enduring the ongoing economic challenges, Dunkerson said.
“Jack can do this by enhancing existing programs and introducing new ones that help facilitate growth,” he said. “As president and COO, Jack is in an excellent position to recommend and implement best practices and forward thinking processes that benefit our customers.”
Because Atlas has a very powerful name in the industry, Dunkerson said that the company enjoys strong brand recognition.
“However, we cannot live in the past, and Jack will be tasked to work with the Atlas agents on building name recognition with customers that may be using a competitors’ service,” he said.
Additionally, Dunkerson said the company is exploring options to place its name and expertise in areas that will benefit Atlas and its subsidiaries.
“Jack will play a key role in selecting the right marketing path for us to take,” he added.
Dunkerson said that Atlas Van Lines’ primary challenge is the economy, like many other companies in all industries.
“However, we must position ourselves for the time when recovery begins,” he said. “Jack’s previous work results indicate he has the ability to place our company in a strategic advantage when business and employment improves.”
The Direction
Put Atlas Van Lines and Griffin on a long-term prospect list, as the new leader doesn’t take on the position until early next year. Once settled, Griffin will be looking for new was to promote and grow the Atlas Van Lines brand, so take time now to prepare an impressive introduction.
