Level 3 to buy TelCove

Enjoying the boom of broadband Internet use, Wall Street Journal.
The data-transmission business was overwrought with supply in the late 90s and fell hard with the subsequent tech bust. Level 3 survived the dotcom tempest and is now actively consolidating network providers just as demand is skyrocketing with video over-the-Internet busting out all over. Broadband Internet providers rely upon Level 3 and Telcove networks to transmit their data.
The purchase of Canonsburg, Pa.-based Telcove gives Level 3 access to 22,000 miles of data-transmission lines. Telcove serves 70 markets on the East Coast.
The company announced plans to consolidate their offices and ramp up sales.
“While certain functions will be integrated and some positions eliminated, the primary drivers of value are opportunities to reduce Level 3’s network-related expenses and to increase sales to existing and new customers,” Kevin O’Hara, president and chief operating officer of Level 3, said in a prepared statement.
Level 3 competes against telecom giants Verizon and AT&T. According to the Wall Street Journal, Level 3 often provides network services to competing cable companies who would like to limit the amount of business they transact with those two goliaths.
Level 3 previously bought WilTel Communications Group LLC, Progress Telecom LLC and ICG Communications Inc.
The company’s agency of record is JWT Technology, an account the firm has held since 2002, according to The List database.
We spoke to Chris Hardman, vice president of corporate communications, who told us that TelCove would be "absorbed" into Level 3. He said he couldn't offer any more specific information because the deal was too new.
We’d recommend making some calls to Level 3 about opportunities arising from this and their other consolidations. Level 3 is ramping up to compete with some big players in the telecom industry and would benefit from some strategic marketing pertaining to branding, market share and competitive analysis. Absorbing TelCove will require a lot of rebranding work -- agencies with telecom experience should definitely reach out to Level 3 immediately.
