TV, Digital Opps: US Cellular launches newest national TV ad, increases spending

Opportunity: After debuting its first-ever national TV ad last year, US Cellular has now launched its newest national TV ad. The new spot, titled "My Anywhere Celebration," aired for the first time July 22, and has already cost the company $51,223, according to

Although the mobile company already has a large ad presence, it looks like spending is continuing to rise. Expect broadcast spend to continue to increase,as well as the company's digital and OOH spend. Therefore, mobile and technology-focused sellers should begin making introductions now, as Q3 is historically the company's highest planning period. Focus your pitch around engaging heads of household and older working millennials. Look for traditional and digital ad dollars tied to Q2, as this is typically the company's top buying period.

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, US Cellular spent $14 million on measured media in the Q1 2016, and spent $66.8 million for all of 2015. The largest portion of spending went towards broadcast, specifically spot TV, while the rest of it was divided among print, digital, radio and OOH. 

Digital Breakdown: Since January, Moat reports that US Cellular has run 207 standard display, 14 high impact and 12 video ads on 2,388 publishers (<1% mobile). Of these, 21% were placed site direct versus programmatic. Top ad destinations include gizmodo.com, gawker.com, funnyjunk.com, jalopnik.com, lifehacker.com, jezebel.com, ebay.com and uberhumor.com. Looking at the same period the year before, the company ran 118 standard display, 219 high impact and four video ads on 1,555 publishers (38% mobile; 56% site direct). 

For full 2015, the company ran 243 standard display, 274 high impact and 13 video ads on 3,105 publishers (23% mobile; 55% site direct).
