Rackspace stops acquistion talks, names CEO

Company: Rackspace, the cloud and server hosting provider with US headquarters in San Antonio, Tex.
Opportunity: The company has made two major announcements: (1) It is pulling the plug on potential acquisition and (2) it has promoted its president to CEO. As the company looks to go it alone, be on the lookout for digital, display, search and B2B opportunities.
Experience: Instead of continuing acquisition and partnerships talks, Rackspace has decided to go it alone and has named a new CEO: Taylor Rhodes. Rhodes was previously the company’s president. He is replacing Graham Weston, who will stay on as non-executive chairman of the board. Rhodes has also been given a seat at the board. Of Rhodes, Weston said: ”We are confident that under his leadership, and through the execution of our strategy, Rackspace is well-positioned to lead in the large and growing managed cloud category.”
Of the decision to cutoff partnership and acqusition talks, Weston said: ”We ran a thorough process under the direction of our board of directors, independent advisors, and a Strategic Transaction Committee of the Board. In this process we talked to a diverse group of interested parties and entertained different proposals. None of these proposals were deemed to have as much value as the expected value of our standalone plan. We concluded that the company is best positioned to drive value for shareholders, customers and Rackers through the continued execution of its strategic plan to capitalize on the growing market opportunity for managed cloud services.”
Last summer, Rackspace’s hired Morgan Stanley to sift through acquisition or partnership bids from the likes of Hewlett-Packard, IBM, CenturyLink, Cisco Systems, Dell and EMC.
In an email, Rhodes assured “Rackers” that “after a period of uncertainty, our destiny is back in out hands.” He went on to say that “[i]t’s up to us to execute and win.”
Media Spend: Rackspace spent $17.9 million on measured media in 2013, up 27% from 2012′s $14.1 million. The overwhelming majority of the spend is dedicated to digital (display and search) ads. And while search spend is evenly distributed through all four quarters, display spend was mainly in Q1 and Q4 – spend here more than doubled spend in Q2 and Q3.
