Digital, PR, Event Opps: NFL's Tennessee Titans makes several changes in comm dept

Subject: sponsorships, communications, PR, outdoor

Opportunity: The Tennessee Titans have named Jimmy Stanton as VP of communications, beginning next month. In his new position, Stanton will handle digital media, media relations, community relations, broadcasting and production for the NFL team. Other changes made within the department include the promotion of Ralph Ockenfels to VP of marketing and broadcast and digital rights; Gary Glenn to senior director of digital media; and Robbie Bohren to senior director of media relations. The purpose of Stanton’s hire and the other promotions is to integrate a number of departments that interact directly with the fans. Therefore, with excitement around the Titans at its highest levels since the late 90s/early 2000s thanks to the arrival of QB Marcus Mariota, look for area ad buys and fan engagement initiatives (events, mobile, video, experiential, etc…) to be up, accordingly.

Additional Insight

Experience: Stanton joins the Titans from the University of Tennessee, where he served as associate athletic director of communications. He had also worked in PR and marketing for the University of Kentucky and the Houston Astros and served in the Titans’ media department from 1999-2000.

Media Spend: According to Moat, the Titans did not run any standard display ads last year, nor have they run any so far this year.  But the Titans just launched a marketing campaign featuring newly drafted Marcus Mariota. The campaign features 10 electronic billboards around Nashville, three new slogans (“Aloha Y’all,” “A Heisman in OUR House” and “This Duck Has Landed”) and the team’s web address and ticket office number.

Agency Relationships: According to The List, the Titans handle media buying and planning in-house.
