Score 90 – Review Imminent: Struggling glass packaging producer O-I hires new CMO
Company: Owens-Illinois (O-I), the world’s largest glass container maker.
Opportunity: Hired Suley Muratoglu as CMO to lead global marketing and sales activity. He joins as O-I looks for ways to rejuvenate flat sales in North America, which have bit hard by the recession and big beer’s declines. Consumer discretionary spending may be up but confidence,
Experience: Muratoglu spent the last 20 years at food packaging company Tetra Pak, lastly as VP of marketing and product management for the US and Canada.
O-I’s Largest Customers: In alphabetical order, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Brown Forman, Carlsberg, Diageo, Heineken, Kirin, MillerCoors, Nestle, PepsiCo, Pernod Ricard, SABMiller, and Saxco International. No customer represents more than 10% of O-I’s consolidated net sales, according to the company, but big beer collectively must comprise a sizable chuck given the company’s struggles.
Long-Term Struggles: O-I’s sales have declined annually over the past four years. In fact, 2014 sales of $6.78 billion, 8% below 2011. Accordingly, sales of glass beverage bottles, which account for about 85% of O-I’s annual revenue, are barely moving. O-I expects to appoint a new CEO by the end of the year, who will succeed retiring chief executive Albert Stroucken.
Recently Appointed Decision Maker: O-I America President Andres Lopez was promoted to COO and president of glass containers in February. In this newly created role, Lopez oversees O-I’s business and operations in all of the company’s geographic regions. He’s likely to become CEO.
