ShopKo continues expansion with Hometown additions
Subject: broadcast, regional marketing, digital, social media, radio, print
Company: Shopko, the Green Bay, Wis.-based chain of retail stores that sells brand name merchandise and provides pharmaceutical and optical services. Shopko Stores can be found throughout the Midwest, Mountain and Pacific Northwest regions. Shopko currently operates 350 stores across 22 states. A smaller format store – Shopko Hometown – debuted in 2010. It currently has 180 locations.
Opportunity: ShopKo has announced plans to continue its rapid growth. This summer, 15 new Hometown stores will open across eight states (Mont., Kan, NM, Okla., ND, Minn., Colo. and Ind.). ShopKo already opened 20 stores earlier this year and will add 15 more in October – bringing the total of stores opened in 2015 to 50. ShopKo Hometown stores focus on serving smaller, rural communities and offers both national and private label brands. Q4 is ShopKo's biggest spend period, like most retailers, so look for dollars toward the end of the year – especially as the expansion ramps up.
Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, Shopko spent $10.1 million on measured media in 2014. The majority of this was spent on print ads ($5.5 million), while broadcast and radio received about $2.1 million each.
Moat reports that all of Shopko's 2014 standard display ads were purchased directly from publishers instead of by ad networks or exchanges. Overall, the retailer ran display with 41 publishers (5% mobile), mostly local news sites like idahostatesman.com, uppermichigansource.com, leadertelegram.com, packers.com and ketv.com. Digital ads were run almost exclusively in December.
So far this year, the company has run three standard display ads on 12 publishers – 99% of which were purchased directly from the publisher.
Agency Relationships: In April, ShopKo named here). According to The List, media is handled in-house.
