Like other traditional retailers, Macy's has been in the tank for many quarters and finally decided it would be worth trying lousing, so expect to be drilled heavily in that area from now on.

Opportunity: The old school retailer has managed to hire a new CMO between games of canasta, taking it into the top 20 of the omnichannel fueled turnaround, including brand, promotional, store, digital and events marketing activity, according to a statement.

Interestingly, Macy's didn't wait to hire Lennox before bringing on new agencies (New York-based JWT, supposedly off the roster after Macy's awful 2015 holiday performance, may be back in the running since Lennox spent 20 years there before going client side.

Some direct response dollars may be available going client direct since Macy’s has an in-house platform created by Acxiom.

Experience: Reporting to future CEO Jeff Gennette (research here), Lennox succeeds Martine Reardon, who was CMO for 32 years. Before Toys "R" Us, Lenox was CMO at jewelry retailer Zales for five years. Also, he spent about 20 years at WPP ad agency JWT, culminating as EVP and US marketing director for De Beers. 

Media Spend: Macy's spent $881.5 million on measured media last year, up 7% from $826.1 million in 2014, according to Kantar Media. Since 2014, more than 52% of budget has gone to print, chiefly newspaper ads. Most of the remainder, about 36%, goes to broadcast ads. 

TV Breakdown: During the past year, $115.4 million has gone to national TV ads (see breakdown right), up from $74 million over the same period a year earlier.
