Print Opps: R.J. Reynolds taps Cavalry Chicago for upcoming Newport campaign

Company: Winmo), headquartered in Winston-Salem, NC, is one of the largest manufacturers of tobacco products in the United States, making and selling five of the nation's most popular cigarette brands: Camel, Kool, Winston, Doral and Salem. R.J. Reynolds is a subsidiary of Reynolds American, Inc.

Opportunity: After Cavalry Chicago made its transition from beer to cigarettes, quietly picking up the R.J. Reynolds account last February. According to Cavalry's CEO Marty Stock, both the agency and company didn't announce the appointment because etiquette in the ad industry dictates that cigarette accounts not be the subject of publicity. However, the agency is now announcing that it is working on advertising for the company's biggest brand, Newport, which is the nations second largest cigarette brand behind Marlboro.

Therefore, look for a campaign from Newport to hit the markets soon. Keep in mind that because cigarette advertisements have stricter guidelines, the campaign wont launch on typical TV or digital outlets. Instead, look for print to be the biggest channel for the new ads, specifically magazines, as print has taken up almost all of the company's media spend, according to Kantar Media. Currently the company doesn't advertise on a digital platform at all, however, as digital continues to push print to the back burner, look for display ads to slowly make their way into the spending. Although, this may be much further in the future, as advertising for tobacco products in general can raise concerns. With that said, print focused sellers should be reaching out to R.J. now to pick up any available spending ahead of the campaign. Focus your pitch around reaching legal drinking age Millennial and Gen X males.

Additionally, Cavalry credits its R.J. business as the void filling the gap created by the loss of the Coors account, however, the agency still remains hopeful that it will eventually land another beer account. Thus, readers should keep an eye on the agency, as it is clearly chugging away for the opportunity to get beer back on its roster.
