Philip Morris tests smokeless tobacco

As smoking rates continues to drop, Philip Morris USA is test marketing a smokeless-tobacco product, according to the Wall Street Journal. The product, Taboka, is small pouch holding tobacco that users place in their mouth.
The product – test marketed in Indianapolis – is being sold as an alternative to cigarette. One advertisement reads: “Step away from the light … tuck a Taboka instead.”
The number of smokers in the country has steadily declined over the last two decades. 20 years ago, 30 percent of the population smoked. Today, smokers represent only 20.9 percent of the population.
A Taboka tin sells for about the same price as a pack of cigarettes in Indianapolis. The disposable container holds twelve of the porous pouches.
The deal marks a continued push by cigarette makers into the smokeless tobacco market.
Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Reynolds American plans to branch into smokeless products as well. The company plans to market a snuff-life product under its Camel brand.
Earlier this month, Reynolds bought the smokeless tobacco giant, Conwood, which owns such brands as Grizzly and Kodiak.
We called a contact at the Richmond, Va.-based Philip Morris to learn more about the smokeless plans.
She said the purpose of the test market is to see how appealing the product is to current smokers. She said a marketing campaign would focus on point-of-sale and direct mail marketing to smokers 25 and older.
She said Chicago-based Leo Burnett is the agency of record for Philip Morris. They are handling the marketing campaign and the direct mail pieces. They have held the Philip Morris account since 1954, according to The List Database. Waukesha, Wisc.-based Morgan & Myers has handled the corporate affairs for Philip Morris since 2005, according to The List database.
We’d recommend approaching executives at Philip Morris about their foray into smokeless tobacco. Or contacting Leo Burnett about any marketing offshoots that may arise from their new campaign.
