Cigar maker Swisher promoting Marketing SVP to CEO in January

Privately held Swisher International Inc., the world’s largest cigar company by units sold, is appointing its senior vice president of marketing as its new leader when President and CEO Tom Ryan retires at the end of the year.

When Ryan retires on Dec. 31, Peter Ghiloni, SVP of marketing, will take over as president and CEO, according to a press release. Ryan, who began his career in the industry in 1967, has held the position since 2004.

Ghiloni (pictured right) began his career in the tobacco business with the United States Tobacco Co. in 1972. In 1983, he moved to The Helme Tobacco Co. as VP of marketing, and in 1991 he was promoted to SVP of sales and marketing.

When Swisher and Helme merged in 1994 Ghiloni became SVP of marketing for the combined company.

"I'm honored by the trust that the board has placed in me, and while no one can truly replace Tom, I look forward to taking both my industry experience and what I have learned from him and other dedicated Swisher employees to move this company forward," Ghiloni said in a statement. “While our industry faces many interesting challenges, I also see great opportunity and I'm optimistic about where our team can take this company.”

Based in Jacksonville, Fla., Swisher accounts for one-third of U.S. cigar sales and is the nation’s largest cigar exporter. The company’s portfolio of cigars and smokeless tobacco products includes Swisher Sweets, King Edward, Optimo, Blackstone, Chattanooga Chew and Santa Fe.

This summer Swisher Sweets released a line of “e-Swisher” products to compete within the growing electronic cigarette market, which includes brands like.

WinmoEdgeInterestingly, he described e-cigs as a consumer electronic product versus a cigarette.

Swisher's entry into the e-cigarette market is the second by a traditioanl tobacco company in recent months.. acquired prviately held Blu Ecigs in April for $135 million.

E-cigs are battery powered tubes that deliver nicotine by vaporizing a nicotine-derived liquid without combustion. Refill cartridges can be purchased in different amounts and flavors, and often retail for half the cost of traditional cigarettes.

According to The Wall Street Journal, e-cigs make up a tiny fraction of the $100 billion U.S. tobacco market, but the niche industry has grown rapidly since it arrived from China five years ago. It now accounts for between $250 million and $500 million in annual sales, accordign to industry estimates.

Blu, sold in more than 13,000 retail outlets like Walgreens and Sheetz, had about $30 milion in revnue last year.

We were unable to verify which agencies, if any, that Swisher currently works with.

Swisher allocated $470,000 towards measured media in 2011, up from $390,000 in 2010 and $220,000 in 2009. This funding went completely towards B2B magazine ads all three years.
