Score 50 - Close Watch: PPG promotes global marketer amid consumer paint transition

Company: PPG Industries, Pittsburgh-based supplier of paintings, coatings, glass and specialty materials.

Opportunity: Expanded the role of CPG marketing veteran Max Wetzel, CMO and GM of home centers for PPG Architectural Coatings, to include the duties of VP of global strategic strategy for architectural coatings. Basically, he's now running paint marketing worldwide instead of just in Canada and the US.

A marketing decision maker promotion doesn't typically signal a roster shakeup but Wetzel is a bit different. For starters, he's only been with PPG since 2014 and previously spent more than 10 years in consumer marketing (Heinz). Also, PPG is brands such as Glidden, which receives the bulk of PPG's ad support. 

Therefore, since paint makes up 93% of company revenue and home improvement trends are strong, it would make sense for PPG to continue expanding its ad presence nationally. Advertising levels are ramping up at rival paint brands, which already have much more brand recognition than PPG (research here). 

So, agencies should segue a congrats email to Wetzel into a pitch around helping PPG with these ongoing efforts. Readers with expertise engaging mature millennial women should have the advantage.

Sellers - similarly continue to go after Q3 dollars that may still be available, but start laying the groundwork for next spring/summer, when paint brands tend to advertise the most. Shelter focused sellers should have the edge. Omnicom's PHD, NY has media planning and buying.
