Startup Partnership Opps: GE taps CMO to lead Lighting division's growth
Subject: Branding, marketing, advertising, experiential
Company: sale of the appliance division to Electrolux earlier this month. Combined, both businesses accounted for only 5.7% of GE’s $146 billion in revenue last year, with appliances leading the way.
Opportunity: Effective Oct. 1, CMO Beth Comstock will add leadership of GE Lighting unit to her purview. The 130-year-old business commercialized Thomas Edison’s incandescent light bulb, but it’s in the midst of reinventing itself for an increasingly LED technology lit world. This should lead to new marketing and advertising opportunities as Comstock works to spark Lighting’s growth in new segments.
Executive Structure: GE Lighting' CEO Maryrose Sylvester will keep her title and report to Comstock, who also oversees partnerships with startups and Silicon Valley-based investment firm GE Ventures.
Growing Into An Infrastructure Business: For the consumer market, GE already has introduced worked together on LED lighting fixtures that can communicate with shoppers’ smart phones while in-store, creating new new location-based services for retailers.
Business customers already account for 70% of GE Lighting’s revenues and company research forecasts that 70% of the overall lighting industry’s revenue will come from LEDs by 2012, up from 18% in 2012.
Competition: Competitors in the fast growing LED lighting space include Cree (research here), which focuses more on low-cost home lighting. It was the first company to produce home LED lights at $10. However, it’s working to build its brand on the commercial side too.
Agency Relationships: Omnicom’s EFM Agency (digital), according to The List.
