Genentech wins FDA approval for Avastin

The Story
Biopharmaceutical firm Genentech announced new FDA approval for its cancer drug Avastin, and decided to cap the drug's cost for lower-income patients, according to The New York Times.
The South San Francisco, Calif.-based company announced that Avastin just received approval to treat non-small-cell lung cancer. The drug was approved two years ago to combat colorectal cancer.
The treatment costs about $4,400 per month for colorectal cancer, but twice as much is needed to fight the lung cancer. The cost could send the yearly bill for lung cancer treatment to $100,000 – opening the company up to strong criticism.
Genentech announced a cap of $55,000 per year for all payers including health insurance companies, hospitals and private parties. Low-income patients would be eligible for free drugs or assistance with co-payments.
Genentech is a leading biotechnology company that discovers, develops, manufactures and commercializes biotherapeutics for significant unmet medical needs.
The Research
Genentech can afford to implement some cost-caps.
In its latest quarter, Genentech’s sales of Avastin totaled $435 million, up 34 percent from the 2005 quarter.
Overall, the company has been growing at a tremendous pace. Genentech’s sales rose 46 percent over 2004 to $6.6 billion. Fortune just ranked them No. 79 on their annual 100 Fastest-Growing Companies list.
In an earlier conversation with a contact at Genentech, we learned that the company has a creative agency of record, but several firms work with the company on a project-by-project basis. We spoke to Genentech in July after the company acquired the rights to another cancer treatment (WinmoEdge article.)
According to The List database, Bedminster, N.J.-based MCS Public Relations serves as the PR agency of record for Genentech.
The Direction
Genentech’s a great company with a successful line of products and a healthy pipeline. The Avastin opportunities are likely all wrapped up, but agencies looking for pharmaceutical work couldn’t find a much better opportunity. We’d suggest revisiting the earlier cancer article and start building a relationship with Genentech’s executives.
Public relations agencies should also suggest the best way to capitalize on the price-cap angle. Big Pharma could use a little image polishing – it gets just a little more respect than Big Tobacco and Big Oil.
