UnitedHealth buys Sierra Health Services

The Story
In a move to bolster its presence in the Southwestern United States, health care benefits provider UnitedHealth Group announced its acquisition of Sierra Health Services, according to the Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal
Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth said it will buy Las Vegas-based Sierra Health for a reported $2.6 billion. The deal is slated to close at year’s end.
“Combining UnitedHealthcare and Sierra brings together two strong and innovative companies that each have a heritage of providing consumers access to affordable, quality medical care,” UnitedHealth Chief Executive Officer Stephen Hemsley said in a statement.
Sierra serves over 310,000 employer-sponsored health plan participants in Nevada, and more than 320,000 members of senior and government programs nationwide.
UnitedHealth Group offers a range of products and services under its six business units: UnitedHealthcare, Ovations, AmeriChoice, Uniprise, Specialized Care Services and Igenix. The company serves about 70 million people across the country.
The Research
With Sierra Health in its fold, UnitedHealth is better positioned to gain significant market share in the Southwest.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Nevada was the second-fastest growing state in 2006; for the past 19 years, the state has taken the top spot in population growth.
As part of the agreement, UnitedHealth also gains Sierra’s affiliate Southwest Medical Associates, which touts itself as Nevada’s biggest multi-specialty medical group practice. UnitedHealth is allowing its newly-acquired business’ management team to remain intact.
Sierra Health’s locale also enables UnitedHealth to improve its offerings to senior citizens, Medicaid and Medicare participants.
“The assets, brands and reputations of Sierra and Southwest Medical Associates will significantly strengthen our growth platform in the (Southwest) region,” David Wichmann, president of UnitedHealth’s individual and employer markets business group, said in a statement.
According to The List database, UnitedHealth’s agency of record is the Chicago office of Austin-based agency GSD&M, an account held since 2000. Sierra Health has no announced agency relationships.
According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, UnitedHealth spent $44.2 million on measured media in 2005. About $18.1 million went toward cable television ads, $10 million for national magazines and about $4.2 million for national Sunday supplements.
The Direction
Firms in the Southwestern region should be on the lookout for work after UnitedHealth’s deal closes. Agencies with both general market and health care communications experience should apply to assist UnitedHealth in informing current and potential customers about its new offerings. Public relations firms should also approach Sierra with solutions to internal and external communications during its transition.
