Account in Jeopardy Update: Tim Hortons loses two execs post-acquisiton

Update (01/07): Less than a month after announcing the new leadership team that would accompany the chain’s acquisition by Burger King, Tim Hortons has announced the departure of two members of that new team. Newly named president of Tim Hortons US, Mike Meilleur, and Scott Bonikowsky, chief communication and corporate affiars officer of the newly created Restaurant Brands International, both left of their own accord.  Little else is known about the departures, but could it portend the departure of other executives as well?

Company: Restaurant Brands International (RBI), now the world's third largest quick-service restaurant company. The result of Tim Hortons, RBI will be based in Canada.

Opportunity: The $11 billion acquisition of Tim Hortons by Burger King has officially been completed. The two QSRs now belong to (and are traded under the name) Restaurant Brands International. Both brands will continue to be operated separately. Its been a tough few years for fast-food restaurants, and BK and Tim Hortons are no exception. Both BK and Tim Hortons have appointed new CMOs this year, so keep an eye out for changes as new management looks to overcome past obstacles. Since BK hired a new AOR earlier this year (research here). Note that Nowlan came on board back in May, so agency hire decisions may already have been made – they just haven't been announced because the acquisition wasn't official yet.

RBI Leadership Team: The former CEO of Burger King Worldwide, Daniel Schwartz, has been chosen as CEO of RBI. Schwartz said the company has  chosen a “world-class” leadership team, which includes former Tim Hortons CEO Marc Caira, now vice-chairman of RBI's board of directors. Other executives include: Elias Diaz Sese, president of Tim Hortons; Jose Cil, president of Burger King; Scott Bonikowsky, chief communication and corporate affairs officer; Josh Kobza, CFO; and Cara Piggot, SVP of supply chain.

For the Tim Hortons brand, Peter Nowlan has been named CMO and Felipe Athayde has been named EVP of US development.

At Burger King, Axel Schwan is global CMO and Alex Macedo is president of BK North America.

Media Spend:  According to Kantar Media, Tim Hortons spent $11.5 million on measured media last year; BK spent $232.8 million.  Both companies spent the majority of the money on broadcast ads, which took up most of Tim Hortons budget. BK also spent a marge portion on Hispanic media, out-of-home, radio and digital ads.
