Bridgford Foods finally in the black

The Story
After a string of losses, snack maker Bridgford Foods swung a fourth quarter profit, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The Anaheim, Calif.-based company reported earnings at $1.1 million, compared to losses of $340,000 in the same quarter last year. At $43.2 million, quarterly revenue also increased 3.2 percent over last year.
For the year, Bridgford reported earnings of $1.2 million. Annual sales increased 2.6 percent to $134.3 million.
Bridgford manufactures a range of consumer and professional food products including meats, breads, cheeses, salads and more. The company operates in two business segments: processing and distribution for frozen products and processing and distributing refrigerated and snack food products.
The Research
The past year was particularly trying for Bridgford Foods’ finances.
Although revenues increased on a quarterly basis, the company reported a string of profit declines over each quarter.
In its third quarter, Bridgford reported a paltry 2 percent in revenue, with $28.3 million in sales. However after covering the cost of ingredients, equipment, administrative functions and other incidentals, the company reported a low $224,000 profit - which is a 7 percent decline from the previous year's quarter.  
According to The List database, Bridgford has no announced agency relationships.
According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, the company spent about $80,000 on media in 2005, all of which was spent on free-standing insert coupons.
The Direction
As Bridgford’s good fortunes continue, the company could be ready to launch into a full-scale marketing campaign to keep the momentum going. We suggest general market firms that can work on a shoestring budget should keep the company on their radar for future creative.
We also see a good opportunity for interactive firms to step in and update Bridgford’s Web site. As consumers are increasingly using the Web as a brand’s litmus test, a shoddy site can leave a sour taste in their mouths.
