Grocery company Spartan Stores purchases VG stores

The Story
Midwest grocer Spartan Stores Inc. expanded its coverage in Michigan by acquiring 17 supermarkets and 15 pharmacies from VG Food Center Inc. and VG’s PharmacyInc., according to BusinessWeek.
Byron Center, Mich.-based Spartan Stores expects the transaction to increase annual retail segment sales by approximately $300 million. Because Fenton, Mich.-based VG is an existing Spartan distribution customer, Spartan Stores expects consolidated sales to rise by about $150 million.
"We are very pleased to complete the acquisition of VG's retail stores,” Chief Executive Officer Dennis Eidson said in a statement. “This transaction provides us with the opportunity to sustain our long-term performance improvement record, capture additional operational synergies and serve communities in key Michigan markets where we had no retail presence.”
Spartan Stores is the nation's 10th largest grocery distributor with warehouse facilities in Grand Rapids and Plymouth, Mich. The company distributes more than 40,000 private-label and national brand products to approximately 350 independent grocery stores in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. Spartan Stores also owns and operates 101 retail supermarkets in Michigan, including Family Fare Supermarkets, Glen's Markets, D&W Fresh Markets and Felpausch Food Centers.
The Research
Spartan Stores will retain the VG brand while adding its own marketing and merchandising expertise to the chain.
“As we begin the integration process, we will bring our distinct and successful approach to marketing, merchandising, and category management to these markets, while preserving the long-standing and exceptional shopping experience that VG's has delivered to its customers for many years,” Eidson said.
In October, Eidson was promoted from executive vice president of marketing and merchandising and chief operating officer to CEO (WinmoEdge article.)
The company spearheads extensive community relations activities. Most recently Spartan Stores participated in a giveaway of 8,400 pounds of chicken for the holidays. Spartan also supports the Special Olympics and various hunger and wellness initiatives.
Net sales for the company’s 12-week second quarter increased 4.8 percent compared to last year’s second quarter, at $626.8 million.
The List database has not yet determined which, if any, agencies work with Spartan Stores.
Nielsen Monitor-Plus reports that Spartan Stores spent about $741,000 on media in 2007, nearly all of which was spent on spot television.
The Direction
Now that the new CEO has his feet wet, this may be a good time to introduce your agency’s capabilities to the growing chain.
