Opportunity: We've received a tip that 2017 media RFPs will be issued shortly, perhaps as soon as the beginning of November. We've been unable to confirm what types of partners will be RFP'd, but it's a sign that you need to be top-of-mind with in-house and agency decision makers now.
Aldi's ad budget is mostly TV supported by radio, social media and newspaper "hey, we're open and here's some deals" ads. Digital outlays have been low in the past but they finally started rising this year. So, there's lots of revenue potentially up for grabs here, particularly if you have high reach among urban mature millennials, particularly moms, whose aggressive US expansion strategy, larger national buys shouldn't be far off, as well.
Media Spend: $50.3 million went to measured media last year, up 14% from $44.3 million in 2014, according to Kantar Media. Last year, almost half of this budget, about $21.7 million, supported spot TV buys. The remainder primarily went to English and Spanish-language newspapers, national spot, radio and display.
TV Breakdown: Since last October, $1.7 million has been spent on national TV ads (see targeting right), up from $267,000, according to iSpot.tv.
Digital Breakdown: Since January, $371,000 has gone to 67.6 million desktop impressions, almost half of which were site direct and 35% of which were bought from DSP RadiumOne. Ads have run mostly on dallasnews.com, ebay.com, food.com, foodnetwork.com, coupons.com, youtube.com, ajc.com and cnn.com, per Pathmatics.
Mobile spending has been low, but $128,400 did fuel 5.2 million video impressions, 87% of which were site direct. Almost $102,000 was spent on 3.1 million impressions on foodnetwork.com. Other top targeted sites are cookingchanneltv.com cnn.com and tmz.com.
