Kroger acquires to expand natural, organic offerings; ramp up digital, e-commerce ef...

Company: The Kroger Co., the largest U.S. grocery chain, with more than 2,400 stores.

Opportunity: Will acquire in the third quarter to expand into new healthy segments, ramp up omnichannel expansion in online ordering and eventually utilize Vitacost’s e-commerce platform. Kroger has been on the forefront of grocers’ loyalty, digital and personalization evolution, so expect spending in these areas to continue rising.

Expanding Further in Health Segment: Kroger will have access to’s more than 45,000 products across vitamins, supplements, and various natural and organic foods to complement its own Kroger and Vitacost only had 10,000 products overlap, CFO Mike Schlotman said in a conference call. 

E-Commerce Plans?: Kroger will integrate Vitacost’s e-commerce platform with’s products and offerings, and develop further customization for consumers. Kroger has worked to make e-commerce viable nationally based on the success of home delivery and in-store pickup at its Colorado-based .

Digital Revamp: Kroger, which has offered digital coupons since 2009, has revamped its digital marketing and consumer connection efforts after hiring several new executives from large retailers like Macy's, Luxottica and Sears between 2012 and 2013, we reported last year (research  acquired YOU Technology in February to further boost its digital initiatives. YOU Technology's platform helped build Kroger's omnichannel efforts across online, mobile on-the-go, and in-store consumer engagement.

Competitor Activity: The digital shift comes as Amazon and Walmart expand their grocery businesses, including home delivery grocery services. Also, look out for advances at growing startup Instacart (research here).

Recent CEO Promotion: Rodney McMullen became Kroger's CEO in January. He has been with the company for 36 years, most recently as president and COO. He succeeded David Dillon, who was the company's CEO for 10 years.

Media Spending & Agency Relationship: Kroger's measured media spending was $207.6 million last year, down from 2012′s $219.4 million, according to Kantar Media. The company did raise allocations to spot TV, outdoor, and magazine ads.
