Q4-H1 Media Opps: American Express to increase marketing levels, digital focus

Opportunity:  American Express announced in its Q3 earnings call that looking towards next quarter, it plans to continue providing elevated marketing support for its different offerings. For starters, EVP Jeff Campbell stated that the AmEx plans to "continue building upon its digital marketing capabilities [to] bring on a record number of new card members this year with expanded acquisition campaigns, both in the U.S. and key international markets." 

He went on to state that the company will also be increasing marketing efforts to support its Platinum Card franchise, which announced some big changes earlier this month, including expanded travel benefits for US consumers and small business Platinum products. "These new benefits are just one step in a series of further enhancements that we plan to make to the Platinum product over the course of the next year," said Campbell.

As a result, he explained that AmEx now anticipates that marketing and promotion expenses during Q4 will be significantly higher for that period and for the entire year, expecting spend to be more than 10% above its 2015 close). This follows the here), 

With that said, expect ad spend to continue to be up through the end of the year, with special attention on digital. So, digital sellers, if you haven't already, be sure to reach out now to pick up any ad dollars as they become available. Specifically, look for ad dollars tied to driving awareness of the company's Platinum business and increasing new card members. Currently, according to Winmo, WPP’s DigitasLBi, NY is on digital. Keep in mind that most of AmEx's digital dollars are programmatic.

Media Spend: Kantar Media reports that American Express allocates the largest portion of its media spend towards broadcast, primarily network and cable TV. Search takes up the second largest amount of spending, followed by digital display, print, out-of-home (OOH), sponsorship and radio.

Digital Breakdown: Per Pathmatics, although you can see that AmEx's digital spend has decreased through desktop and video since last year, the company only recently made plans to hike its digital efforts.
