Hill-Rom hospital beds & health care equipment hires Prez, CEO
Hill-Rom Holdings, a maker of hospital beds and other health care equipment, announced the appointment of John Greisch to the role of president and chief executive officer, according to IndyStar.com
Greisch joins the Batesville, Ind.-based company after spending seven years with Bazter International, a health care company in Illinois. He formerly served as president of international operations of that company, which develops, manufactures and markets products for people with hemophilia, immune disorders, infectious diseases, kidney disease, trauma and other chronic and acute medical conditions.
He replaces Peter Soderberg, who had previously announced his intentions to retire. The move for Greisch to replace Soderberg was designed to make each company more focused on its core business and more attractive to investors.
During his leadership, Soderberg oversaw the 2008 separation of Hillenbrand’s two business units – hospital-bed maker Hill-Rom and Batesville Casket Co. – into two independent publicly traded companies.
Hillenbrand Industries Inc. is a health care and funeral services company. Its two operating divisions provide funeral and casket preparation, financial services and hospital beds and equipment.

“He will be the president and CEO, so how that plays out into what he focuses on and what his goals are and such, it’s premature to say,” she said. “We have an ongoing strategic plan that was put in place in 2006, and we’ll be continuing to work towards that goal, which includes marketing and sales.”
Hill-Rom is entirely B-to-B focused and predominantly sells to the hospital community. Green-Caldwell said that the company’s products are used at every point along the “care continuum,” from hospital care to home care to long-term care.
“We maybe did one foray into (television advertising,) but we work on providing solutions for our clients, for our customers, and a lot of what we do is a very customized approach with a strong and personalized sales force,” she said.
Our source said that while the bulk of the business is with the hospital, Hill-Rom has a very strong post-acute care division that works with nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.
“It’s a kind of complicated sales channel, even with direct-to-consumer, a lot of people would pay for or would be looking at their insurance or their third party affiliates that would purchase the equipment we sell,” Green-Caldwell said. “We’re the largest global manufacturer of beds, but not just bed technology, also the information systems that go with that – the medical technology around that.”
She said that even the furnishings that Hill-Rom designs always focus on the patient environment, which will depend on where the patient is in the grand scheme of care – whether it’s in a hospital setting or a long-term care facility.
“We have over 300 clinicians on staff, and we get in and work with customers to help them develop the solutions for their patients,” Green-Caldwell said. “Depending on what a hospital facility or a care facility may be doing, we help them come up with the solutions. I suspect that if you look at the dynamics of where we are as an aging population, which is the case anyway… the trend is wanting to stay home, to be in a living situation that’s more home-like, so there are different types of needs.”
It is this type of customization that Hill-Rom uses to market to its core demographic. Green-Caldwell said that the company has put together its sales needs, which include clinicians who’ve been on the floor and caring for patients and understand what those needs entail.
“(They) have the ability to look at solutions across many organizations across the country and across the world, and bring in that expertise to help these caregivers to find solutions,” she said.
Our source confirmed that Cincinnati, Ohio-based Northlich has handled Hill-Rom’s public relations efforts since 1998, and added that the company does work with a number of design firms, but as for the other initiatives, she said Hill-Rom relies on its internal team.
“We use a number of agencies depending on the needs or projects we have going, but we don’t have an agency of record,” Green-Caldwell said.
Because Hill-Rom primarily contracts agencies on a project basis, there may be some opportunity moving forward with a new leader in tow. Also, design firms may find an opportunity here to work with Hill-Rom on various jobs as well.
