New CMO to join Sovereign Bank

The Story
Sovereign Bank, a financial institution that primarily operates in the northeast, announced the appointment of a new chief marketing officer, according to the company.
Robert Galea joins Reading, Pa.-based Sovereign with more than 24 years of sales and marketing experience in the finance industry. He most recently served as executive vice president and CMO for Wachovia Dealer Services.
Galea has also held senior marketing positions at Chittenden Bank, Imperial Bank (now Comerica) and Home Savings of America. Galea received his Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Marketing from Western Michigan University.
As Sovereign Bank’s marketing head, Galea will lead the development and execution of all of the company’s corporate and consumer marketing, including integrated communications, strategic analysis, product management and marketing communications.
Sovereign Bank boasts $87 billion in assets and operates 750 banking locations in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The company provides a wide range of commercial and consumer finance and banking services.
The Research
WinmoEdge spoke with Ellen Molle, vice president of communications, for more information on Sovereign Bank’s marketing strategy.
Molle said that currently, Sovereign employs a full-scale marketing strategy, which includes radio advertisements on New England Sports News, the network that airs Boston Red Sox games; the company also has a partnership with New England sports talk radio network WEEI.
“We do the full-scale of print advertising on both retail and commercial side,” she said. “In addition to radio, print and TV, we do a lot of sponsorships as well.”
Molle said that it is too early to tell what direction Galea will take Sovereign Bank’s marketing strategy, and that the new executive hasn’t communicated to the Boston-based business leadership team what changes he will be making. 
“It’s a little early to discuss changes, because he (Galea) just started on Tuesday,” Molle said. “He’s conducting a full review of everything.”
According to The List database, Boston-based Partners & Simons handles Sovereign’s creative advertising duties. 
According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, Sovereign Bank spent about $60,000 on media in 2006, all of which was directed to spot television advertising.
The Direction
Northeastern agencies should keep an eye on Sovereign Bank in coming months.
