Print, Digital Opps: Morgan Stanley taps Spark to handle media

Opportunity: MS has announced it will shift media next year from Interpublic’s Spark. With a new shop managing budgets, now’s the time to start introducing yourself to the new team. We’ll keep you posted as we locate new contact. An edge should go to mature millennial focused news, finance and lifestyle sellers based on MS’s ad presence this year. 

The shift comes a year after Mandell Crawley became Morgan Stanley’s second-ever CMO (more here). Since Crawley was tasked with increasing the role of retail wealth management, look for revenue to focus more on that consumer driven business segment. Note that this year MS launched a new brand campaign that featured the company’s  ”real human” benefits and its ability to change people’s financial health for the positive, even after a financial crisis.

Media Spend: Kantar Media reports that MS spent $7.7 million on measured media in 2014. Most of this was allocated to print ads: newspapers (49.6%) and magazines (32.5%). Note that spend has dropped dramatically in recent years: 2013 spend was $25.4 million. Q2 and Q3 have been MS’s top buying periods since
