Q2-Q4 Media Opps: Principal Financial Group launches new campaign to better identify with consumers

Opportunity: After appointing a new Lippincott, which features a rounded P and new typography. 

In addition to the “Moving” spot, a second commercial will air in 30-and-60 second versions through the spring and fall. TV will be supported with a digital and social media push, as well. 

Therefore, TV and digital sellers should reach out now to secure any ad dollars on the table in the upcoming quarter and for Q3 and Q4. Those who have experience reaching middle class household decision makers will have an advantage here, as this seems to be Principals target consumer. Keep in mind that Principal expects to spend more this year on advertising than it has in the past. Omnicom’s OMD handles media planning and buying.

Additional Insight

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, Principal spent almost $9 million on measured media last year. It was divided between broadcast, print and digital. Broadcast made up the largest portion of media spending, and mainly contributed towards cable TV, and a small amount towards spot TV.

Print also made up a large portion of the spending, and was allocated towards magazines and national newspapers. Digital spend went towards online video and internet display.

TV Breakdown: For all of 2015, Principal’s national TV spend was $3.5 million. Already, since the beginning of 2016, the financial group has spent $2.3 million and plans to continue continue spending throughout the rest of the year. The ads have aired on big networks such as CBS, ESPN and CNN, iSpot reports. 

Digital Breakdown: According to Moat, for all of 2015, Principal ran 84 standard display, 86 high impact and 15 video ads on 63 publishers (13% mobile), 90% of which were placed site direct versus programmatic. Top publishers included business, news and entertainment sites such as inc.com, benefitspro.com, wsj.com, fortune.com, bravotv.com and cbssports.com.

So far in 2016, the banking group has only run two standard display ads on two publishers including benefitspro.com and ocala.com, which is a huge drop from the 22 standard, 19 high impact and five video ads the group ran during the same period in 2015.
