Sales decline at kids' store Gymboree

The Story
Children’s clothing company Gymboree saw January sales decline, according to The San Francisco Business Times.
Same store sales increased 7 percent, but remained flat compared to December results. In the previous year, Gymboree’s January same-stores increased 14 percent. Wall Street analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected the company’s same-stores to increase 9.9 percent.
Gymboree’s fourth quarter revenue edged up 19 percent, to $238.5 million.
The San Francisco-based company operates nearly 700 retail stores under the Gymboree, Janie and Jack and Gymboree Outlet brand names.
The Research
After branching into other markets, this year Gymboree is returning its focus on its core children’s business.
In 2004, the company unveiled Janeville, a concept store presented as a venue for women over 35 who “value modern styling, comfort and individuality.”
Facing slumping sales, last October the company announced plans to close all 17 Janesville stores in an effort to focus on its core children’s business.
The last Janesville closed its doors in January and the company expects a $13.6 million charge in the fourth quarter. 
According to The List database, Gymboree has no announced agency relationships.
According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, the company spent about $900,000 on media in 2005, all of which was spent on national magazine advertising.
The Direction
While same-store sales are a key indicator of health, Gymboree may not be sinking yet. We suggest keeping the company on the radar in coming months, as it has plenty of competition in the marketplace. If the going gets too tough, Gymboree could be looking for an agency help to strengthen its brand voice. This would be a prime opportunity for firms with youth marketing experience to get a foot in the door.
