TV, Digital Opps: Supermarket chain Hy-Vee promotes marketing, merchandising heads (Score 25)
Subject: TV, print, digital
Company: Hy-Vee, headquartered in West Des Moines, IA, is a chain of supermarkets located primarily in the Midwest. Hy-Vee also operates D&D Foods, Lomar Distributing, Midwest Heritage Bank, Florist Distributing and Perishable Distributors of Iowa.
Opportunity: Promoted senior leaders Jeremy Gosch and Donna Tweeten. Gosch, previously SVP and chief merchandising officer, will serve as EVP of strategy and chief merchandising officer, and Tweeten, formerly SVP and CMO, will lead as EVP and CMO. Both will be named permanent members on Hy-Vee's board of directors at the company's annual stockholders’ meeting in December. Also, Tweeten will be appointed to the board’s executive committee.
This is more recognition of a job well done since Gosch and Tweeten have been with the company for more than 10 years. Although promotions such as these typically aren't major indicators of agency change, Tweeten's promotion comes at a pivotal time for the company. It's looking to better engage today's shoppers and drive the Hy-Vee brand forward through marketing and brand development, according to president and CEO Randy Edeker, In other words, women-focused digital readers should take the time to reach out, as Tweeten is more likely than typical CMO promotions to be receptive to evaluating new agencies and ad strategies.
According to Kantar Media, Hy-Vee's media spend has been on the rise since 2014, particularly in broadcast, print and digital. Thus, food-and-beverage-focused sellers should begin reaching out now to pick up any available revenue.
Experience: Joining the company in 2006, Tweeten was most recently SVP and CMO. Prior to that she also served as the company's VP of brand image and VP of marketing and communications. Before joining Hy-Vee, she spent years at The Meyocks Group marketing firm, serving as the president of the firm during her tenure.
Gosch began his career with Hy-Vee in 1995 as a part-time clerk at the Coralville store. He served in a number of store-level positions, until 2012 when he was promoted to assistant VP of operations for Hy-Vee’s northeast district. In 2014, he was promoted to VP of general merchandise, health and beauty care. Then named SVP of merchandising in 2015 and added chief merchandising officer to his title in early 2016.
