InFocus names new CEO, board member

The Story
Projector company InFocus Corp. announced its selection of a new leader and its decision to halt its search for a buyer, according to the company.
Robert O'Malley will join the Wilsonville, Ore.-based company as chief executive officer and board member on October 1.
For the past two and a half years, O'Malley held the position of senior vice president of marketing at Tech Data Corp., an information technology hardware and software worldwide distribution company.
O'Malley’s professional experience includes chief executive roles at technology companies Immersion Corp. and Pinacor Inc., and president of Intermec Technologies Corp. He was also general manager of IBM Corp.'s desktop computer business.
InFocus provides digital projection technology. The company's products include projectors and related accessories for use in the conference room, boardroom, auditorium, classroom and living room.
The Research
Global Marketing Manager Martin Flynn spoke with WinmoEdge about O'Malley's new position with InFocus, future marketing strategies and openness to new ideas.
Flynn said that in O'Malley's new role, he will be primarily focused on the overall leadership and direction of InFocus.

"He is expected to have an influence on all areas of the business, including sales and marketing, but is expected to rely on his leadership team to continue to deliver the right marketing strategy and execution to provide the results expected of us by our shareholders," he said.

Flynn divulged the many marketing strategies and tactics that InFocus has utilized over its 20 year history. The company has implemented public relations, advertising, tradeshows and events, channel marketing, online marketing, direct response, retail POS, field marketing and viral marketing, among others.

He said that these initiatives, for the most part, won't change, but when O'Malley joins the company, InFocus' business plan and marketing strategy will include a stronger emphasis on the company's core products that are sold through commercial channels.

"We expect to continue utilizing print and online advertising, public and media relations, tradeshows, events and retail POS to drive brand awareness among consumers," Flynn said.

He said that at this time, InFocus is content with its current agency, but the company is "always open to new relationships and partnerships."
According to Nielsen Monitor-Plus, the company spent approximately $5 million on national advertising in 2006. About $3.6 million was spent on national magazines, $1.2 million was spent on local newspapers and $100,000 was spent on national newspapers.
The Direction
Flynn said that InFocus is open to relationships and partnerships, so interested agencies should make your presence known now, while O'Malley is still very new to the company. InFocus will want to work with an agency that can boost revenue and keep the company’s investors happy. Come up with B-to-B and B-to-C marketing strategies that promote InFocus’ products and services to the right people who are giving presentations, big and small. Maybe pitch permanent projectors for offices, high school and college classrooms and other similar settings where they could be of use.
