B2B Media Opps: Toshiba drops media shop, consumer biz to focus on B2B PCs

Opportunity: We’ve learned that Initiative, LA is off the account, where ad dollars mainly focused on the B2C PC business. The IPG’s agency’s contract expired March 31.

The loss comes as Toshiba shuts down its Moat data, so substantial dollars should move to B2B channels. 

Therefore, financial, news, golf and tech sellers should start engaging Toshiba as it looks to boost awareness/credibility with corporate and technology decision makers. Focus your pitch on Tecra and Portégé since they’re the primary brands being sold to the corporate market.

Additional Insight

TV Breakdown: During the last 12 months, Toshiba’s national TV spending fell to $6 million (see targeting right) from $9.5 million during the same prior year period, iSpot.tv reports.

Digital Breakdown: Since January, Toshiba’s display presence has skewed much more to tech and news publishers, according to Moat. Top targeted sites have included pcmag.com, edn.com, electronicproducts.com, electronicdesign.com, crn.com and Cnet.com. Ads are still running on some mass news and sports sites, such as nba.com, yahoo.com and bleacherreport.com. 

Note that mobile has only appeared on edn.com so far this year. Also, video has only run on youtube.com.

For comparison, during the same period last year tech and news sites still dominated but entertainment and lifestyle publishers were a much larger part of the desktop mix. Also, mobile and video activity was much higher and spread out across news, entertainment and tech publishers. For example, complex.com reported the most video activity during that time and for all of 2015.
