TV, Digital Opps: Post-It debuts first campaign in three years

Opportunity: Launched the new "Make It Stick" campaign this week.The campaign includes two TV spots and an online documentary touting the advantages of physically writing things down in our increasingly digital world. According to Jeff Hillins, 3M's global business director for the stationary and office supplies division, the campaign marks the start of a "serious shift" in the company's messaging. Unlike previous efforts, which have highlighted Post-Its utility in the process of creativity and self-expression, "this campaign is really focused on achievements."

Along with the messaging shift, Post-It is also shifting its target audience. By placing the focus on achievements and academics, Post-It is looking to capture a younger generation. The campaign also marks the first push from the brand since 2013. Hillins told AdAge that the company looks at its brand strategy in a "three-to-five-year cycle," in order to keep messaging consistent across time and platforms. 

Sellers, you should be reaching out for possible TV and digital dollars now. While this initial push has already debuted, the brand should will likely follow with campaign extensions into next year.

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, Post-It spent only $2.4 million on measured media last year. 

National TV Spend: Post-It has run just one national TV ad this year. It has only run for three days, mostly during the primetime daypart,

For 2015, the company spent $2.6 million to air one spot - "Welcome Back." Note that this spot first ran in August 2013, and is the only creative from the company since then. Overall, Post-It has spent $4.3 million to air the spot (since 2013)/

Digital Breakdown: Moat reports that Post-It has run 17 display ads on 177 publishers (<1% mobile). Top ad destinations include comcast.net, fastcompany.com, pandora.cpm and fastcocreate.com (65% placed site direct versus 35% programmatically). Post-It has also run three high impact and eight video ads (47$ of which were placed site direct).

For the same period in 2015, Post-It ran 53 display, 43 high impact and three video ads on 1,177 publishers (<1% mobile; <1% placed site direct).

For full 2015, 99 display, 48 high impact and five video ads were run on almost 2,000 publishers (<1% mobile; 2% site direct).  Since 2014, Post-It's display presence has been highest on arts & entertainment, news and hobbies & interests sites.
