Rumor - Pennzoil, Quaker State beginning 2017 digital media planning shortly?
Opportunity: We've received word that Quaker State digital 2017 RFPs will be released by October. Of course, we can't confirm that this is true or what types of partners will be RFP'd because media shops rarely give up such exclusive information deliberately, but sellers should certainly start lining up at the pumps now.
Male-focused entertainment and sports sellers should have the edge, based on their display presence this year. The digital RFPs for both brands comes out of WPP's MediaCom, NY.
Digital Targeting Breakdown: Comparing desktop impressions since January, Pennzoil has had 75% share-of-voice compared to Quaker State, per Pathmatics. Both brands have little site partner overlap. In fact, of all the sites they're running on, only nascar.com and stack.com feature ads for both brands.
Pennzoil's top targeted partners include several Gawker Media sites, such as deadspin.com, jezebel.com,kotaku.com and lifehacker.com. Also in the mix are espnfc.us, finane.yahoo.com and motortrend.com.
Quaker State's site mix features theonion.com, bleacherreport.com, avclub.com, imgur.com, the chive.com and imgur.com.
Desktop Purchase Channel Breakdown: The method each brand uses to buy impressions is also different (see Pathmatics charts right). While Pennzoil relies almost completely on site-direct buys, Quaker State relies much on ad networks such as OwnerIQ and Exponential's Tribal Fusion.
