Kawaskai makes several departmental changes

The Story
Power sports giant Kawasaki Motors Corp USA has made several departmental changes that are intended to place greater focus on the company’s marketing efforts, according to Power Sports Business.
Among the several title changes at the Irvine, Calif.-based company, President Tak Teranishi is temporarily filling the position of vice president of marketing and sales/chief marketing officer. In addition, Dave Dora will assume the role of VP of corporate operations and chief operating officer and Tod Kuwata will become EVP of finance, treasurer and chief financial officer.
Director of Marketing Chris Brull will also fill in temporarily as director of marketing communications.
Brull, Odeon Dy, director of market and product strategy, Bill Jenkins director of national sales and Jim Williams, director of sales planning and promotion will now report directly to Teranishi. Together, this group has more than 45 years of Kawasaki experience.
Founded in 1968, Kawasaki Motors Corp. USA boasts an annual revenue of more than $1.6 billion with 480 employees and 1,500 dealers. Its bestselling products include the Ninja-brand sportbikes, Vulcan-brand cruisers, ATV and Mule-brand utility vehicles and the Jet Ski-brand watercrafts. The company is the American subsidiary of Tokyo-based Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.
The Research
Teranishi said in a statement that this new organization, which is led by an experienced group of Kawasaki Motor Corp. USA executives, will help the brand maintain the growth that it has experienced during the last few months.
The company also recently launched a mobile Web site as a part of its growth initiatives to take advantage of on-the-go technologies that customers utilize. The mobile site has all of the capabilities of Kawasaki’s desktop Web site.
“As consumer usage of digital media has evolved over the past few years, we have also progressed our capabilities,” Brull said in a company release. “The mobile site is a better way to serve the needs of an active online audience… we have been focusing on digital communications during the past few years, and this is another example of using the right technology to reach the right audience.”
Brull cited data from the Pew Research Center’s 2009 Internet & American Life project that showed 32 percent of Americans have used mobile phones to access the Internet and 46 percent of those mobile users claim that mobile availability of information is very important to them.
The new site aims to attract these customers by providing quick access to complete product details, which includes specifications, manufacturer's suggested retail price, images and videos. It also provides updated, real-time information that’s updated whenever the desktop Web site is.
The mobile Web site was also designed with dealerships and trade show personnel in mind. Now, they can access product information in the field and engage customers in a more timely manner. Customers can also choose to have Kawasaki promotions sent directly to them through text alerts, via their mobile device.
According to The List database, Kawasaki Motors Corp USA has utilized Newport Beach, Calif.-based O’Leary and Partners as its agency of record since 2004.
The Nielsen Company reported that Kawasaki Motors Corp USA spent $2.8 million on measured media in 2009. About $1.5 million was spent on national magazine ads, about $700,000 was spent on cable television ads and about $400,000 was spent on Internet ads.
