Jiffy Lube slides into Upstate N.Y.; new Texas markets

The Story
Auto oil-change franchise Jiffy Lube, a subsidiary of Shell Oil Company, has launched a strategic growth plan to up its franchise presence in the United States, according to
The Houston-based company announced its 2010 target markets for franchise growth, which include Dallas/Fort Worth, TX, and Upstate New York. Jiffy Lube emphasized that while it intends to grow in these areas, franchise opportunities are available in every existing market.
Jiffy Lube is determined to choose the most qualified franchisee candidates as well as the most effective real estate. The company claims that 20,000 cars pass each Jiffy Lube location each day, which is indicative of where the franchise hopes to set up shop.
With more than 2,000 service centers in North America, Jiffy Lube is the largest system of service centers in the quick-lube industry. Initially created to replace services traditionally provided by full-service gas stations, Jiffy Lube has redefined the drive-through service format.

More specifically, Jiffy Lube International has announced that the Syracuse, N.Y., area is one that is targeted for growth this year.
“Jiffy Lube is looking for individuals who are committed, conscientious and have the ability and the desire to learn and follow a system that is designed to provide value and customer satisfaction,” Director of Market Optimization Barry Wood said in a statement.
The company has stipulated that qualified candidates’ net worth should total $450,000, not including a personal residence, and a minimum liquidity of $150,000.
Additionally, franchisees can expect their initial investment to range from approximately $194,000 to $323,000 with the franchise fee, but not including real estate.
“Jiffy Lube franchisees are supplied with tools and support to help position them for success,” Wood said in a company release. “Each franchisee attends our nationally recognized training program and is provided with powerful marketing materials leveraging the Jiffy Lube brand for local market utilization.”
The announcement follows closely after Heartland Automotive Services Inc., America’s largest Jiffy Lube franchisee, agreed to purchase 12 Cajun Lube stores in Louisiana as part of its expansion plans in an effort to gain foothold in this market.
“The Cajun Lube stores represent a significant opportunity for our company, and the geographic locations create great synergy with our future plans,” Jiffy Lube Heartland Chief Executive Officer Brett Ponton said in a statement.
In other similar news, Jiffy Lube just announced the launch of is rewards program that provides value and cost savings to drivers who default to Jiffy Lube to maintain their vehicles.
As part of this rewards program, customers who buy two Jiffy Lube Signature Service oil changes for the same vehicle within six months earn 50 percent off their third Jiffy Lube Signature Service for the same vehicle.
The List database reported that Boston-based Cone Inc. has conducted Jiffy Lube’s public relations efforts since 2002, Houston-based Team Houston has assisted with its creative initiatives since 2008 and New York-based MediaCom Worldwide does its media buying and planning.
According to the Nielsen Company, Jiffy Lube spent about $13.1 million on national advertising in 2009. About $5.6 million was spent on spot radio ads, about $5.5 million was spent on spot television ads and about $1.2 million was spent on outdoor ads.
