Score 57 - Close Watch: Red Door Spas names CMO amid digital increases

Company: Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spas, with 29 locations nationwide, primarily in the Northeast.

Opportunity: After just over a year on the job, Chad Waetzig has left his position as CMO of Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spas. He has been replaced by Elizabeth Whitman, who previously served as Red Door's president.  Whitman will lead all marketing for RD and will likely use her background in beauty marketing to inform strategy for the brand. 

Red Door Spas relies heavily on digital, direct mail/email and print ads, so pitch luxury female -focused direct response (DR) platforms around top buying periods like Mother’s Day and Christmas. Keep in mind, as well, that parent Elizabeth Arden execs mentioned in the most recent earnings call that investments are up for improving digital capabilities and e-commerce execution, so these are likely priorities for Red Door, too.

Experience: Prior to serving as president of Red Door to Door (EA's Red Door's omnichannel division), Whitman was co-founder and president of Manicube, which was acquired by EA last year.  She has also served as head of marketing for and senior manager for American Express. 

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, Red Door spent $1.5 million on measured media last year. 

Digital Breakdown: Per Pathmatics, RD has spent $62,100 on 20 desktop ads so far this year, amassing 21.4 million impressions. Note that almost half of these referenced (and were deployed ahead of) Mother's Day gifts. Of the 20 ads run this year, 67% have been placed through Google AdX + AdSense. 19% through Media IQ and 13% placed site direct. Top ad destinations have included,, and

Red Door has also spent $1,500 on 13 mobile ads (731,000 impressions), but no video ads have been run this year.

For full 2015, RD spent only $21,000 on 21 desktop ads (2.1 million impressions) and $3,000 on 13 mobile ads (614,000 impressions). Note that majority of these ads were placed from September to December, so digital sellers should definitely be reaching out for possible revenue remaining in 2016.
