Opportunity: Wearable launches, including Fossil Q and Misfit (research here), will receive substantial ad support this holiday season, however, keep going after last minute and supplemental buys tied to the core Fossil and Skagen brands. Both are receiving higher marketing investments, beginning in Q3, along with wearables, said CFO Dennis Secor during the Q2 earnings call.
Male and female-focused fashion endemic sellers should have an advantage, but decision makers should also be receptive to entertainment and news, too. Fossil wants to keep its fashion roots, while reaching the wider millennial lifestyle customer segment. Dentsu Aegis's Optimedia, media AOR since 2014, still has traditional.
Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, Fossil Group spent $10.7 million on measured media in 2015, up from $8 million in 2014. Most of 2015′s spend was allocated to print ads ($5.7 million), while the remainder went to display ads ($3.4 million) and search ($770,000).
Digital Breakdown: Since last September, Fossil has received much more display support than Skagen (desktop SOV 92% compared to 8%), Pathmatics reports. Fossil ads have run mostly site-direct on publishers such as refinery29.com, popsugar.com, gq.com, abou.com/money, elle.com, harpersbazaar.com, esquire.com and marieclaire.com.
Skagen has also run desktop ads primarily site direct on destinations such as realsimple.com, instyle.com, glamour.com, metrolyrics.com, golfdigest.com and babycenter.com.
