Millennial Media Opps: American Eagle launches first global ad campaign

Subject: print, digital, video, social media,

Company: Aerie lingerie sub-brand

Opportunity: Here's that big fall launch we told you about in the spring (research launched its first global advertising campaign.

Created by Calvin Klein ads?) targets "Young America" using millennial social influencers and showcasing  "thought-provoking imagery through the lenses of art, fashion, music, philanthropy and activism," according to a statement.

Besides social media, ads will start running next month in print, digital and out-of-home (OOH). Hopefully, there's still revenue in play for readers still needing deals to hit their end-of-year goals. Focus particularly on digital direct response (DR) advertising dollars since these investments will be up (research , NYC.

Beyond the holidays, continue to seek ad dollars around key retail periods such as spring and back-to-school (BTS). American Eagle is in the midst of a renaissance and aspires to become a global brand, meaning ad spending isn't likely to decline anytime soon. This is especially true as AEO continues to go after teens used to shopping at shuttered rivals such as Aeropostale.

Additional Insight

Media Spend: According to Kantar Media, AEO spent $15.8 million on measured media in 2015, up from $10.3 million in 2014. Last year, most of this went to to print ads ($10.1 million) and out-of-home ($2.6 million). The remainder primarily supported search ads ($1.5 million).

American Eagle hasn't run a national TV ad since 2012, according to iSpot.tv

Digital Breakdown: Since January, $371,000 has created 58.8 million desktop impressions (see share spend breakdown right), Pathmatics reports. Almost 20% of these impressions were bought through ad network Google AdX + AdSense. About 8% were purchased via exchange AppNexus.

Half of the impressions came from refinery29.com and whowhatwear.com. Most of the remainder ran on youtube.com, Hearst's seventeen.com, Conde Nast's self.com, makeupalley.com and yahoo.com.

Surprisingly, given their millennial target, video outlays have been tiny (only $300 for 27,900 impressions). Meanwhile, mobile has received $103,900 for almost 10 million impressions. Almost all of these mobile impressions were bought site-direct from refinery29.com and whowhatwear.com.
