VF Corporation promotes Sportswear exec

The Story
Apparel manufacturer VF Corporation has promoted an executive to lead its portfolio of sportswear brands, according to the company.
Formerly President of VF Corporation’s Nautica Men’s Sportswear and Jeans business, Karen Murray has been named president of the Sportswear coalition, which encompasses all VF sportswear brands.
Murray joined VF Corporation in September 2007. She previously served as group president, menswear, mid-tier, international alliances and licensing for Liz Claiborne Inc., where she worked for 15 years.
Greensboro, N.C.-based VF Corporation is home to a passel of apparel brands, including Wrangler, Lee, The North Face, Vans, Eastpak, Jansport, Red Kap and more.
The Research
Based in the coalition’s New York location, Murray will report to VF Corporation’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Eric Wiseman.
She is replacing Denise Seegal, who left the company in May. Brands under Murray’s leadership include Nautica, Kipling U.S. and John Varvatos.
“I have great confidence in the improvements Karen’s team is making in Nautica sportswear, and in her ability to execute our long term vision for the coalition,” Wiseman said in a statement.
In its first quarter, VF Corporation announced its decision to discontinue its Nautica women’s sportswear wholesale business to focus solely on building out its menswear business. The Nautica brand also took a hit after a large customer decided to reduce its Nautica assortment and the brand saw sales declines with off-price retailers.
According to The List database, VF Corporation works with several agencies for its various apparel brands.
Nielsen Monitor-Plus shows that the company spent about $900,000 on media in 2007. About $500,000 was spent on national magazine ads, about $200,000 was spent on business-to-business efforts and about $200,000 was spent on outdoor ads.
