Buckle loosens purse strings with dividend hike

The Story
In an effort to allay concerns of recent same-store sales declines, apparel chain The Buckle has increased its quarterly dividend, according to BusinessWeek
Operating under The Buckle and Buckle brand names, the Kearny, Neb.-based company has 346 stores in 38 states. Buckle stores target 15- to 25-year-olds, and sells brand name and private label clothing.
In the company’s last quarter, same-store sales declined 5 percent, falling from $54.2 million in 2004 to $51.5 million. Buckle’s dividend increased by 17.6 percent, bringing the value to $.20 a share.
The Research
To cull more information on the company’s marketing tactics, we spoke to Lori Cody, Buckle’s director of marketing and advertising.
Cody informed us that the company does not discuss their marketing strategy. However, agencies seeking a relationship with Buckle should send their portfolios to Cody, as she is the person who reviews creative work.
According to The List database, Kansas City, Mo.-based Design Ranch has handled some creative and branding work for Buckle in the past. Nielsen Media Research reports the company spending an estimated $2.7 million on advertising each year.
