Time Warner provides content to video-sharing site
Time Warner just signed a deal to distribute movies and TV shows through video-sharing site Guba.com, according to Wall Street Journal.
Guba.com looks similar to such other video sites as YouTube.com and MSN Video which allow users to upload home-made video and other clips. Unlike some other sites, Guba.com allows unlimited time lengths for uploaded and downloaded clips.
Under terms of the deal, the site will now sell such movies as “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” and TV shows such as “Babylon 5.”
Guba boasts far less numbers than MSN Video (16 million unique visitors) and YouTube.com (13 million), but the deal should help increase its numbers dramatically. New movies will cost $19.99 on Guba with older titles costing $9.99. Users will also be able to rent movies for $2.99.
Warner made a deal last month with BitTorrent to sell and rent movies using peer-to-peer technology. Along with the other studios, Warner sells movies through specialist online sites such as Movielink and CinemaNow.
We called Guba to get an insight into how they planned to market this new wealth of content.
We spoke to Bart Byers, vice president of operations for the company.
He said that his company’s ad budget is small and includes paid search engine advertising. Byers said the company is really relying upon word of mouth and viral campaigns.
The company has an active public relations campaign, run by San Francisco-based Lewis PR.
Byers said the company is working on its marketing plans. He said he expected his marketing and advertising budget to increase as Guba adds more content.
Guba could make a good long-term prospect. Clearly, the company isn’t rolling in marketing dough right now, but with this pact, revenues should start pouring in. We’d expect Guba would like to cement itself as a leader in this fledgling market of online video sites and would like to hear from a seasoned agency on ways to reach this goal. Agencies with viral and word-of-mouth campaigns may also like to suggest ideas for expanding Guba's reach.
