Digital, Event Marketing Opps: Harlem Globetrotters name AOR for 2017 World Tour

Company: Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation, based in Norcross, Ga.

Opportunity: Named Jackson Marketing, Motorsports & Events as AOR to develop creative elements promoting the team's 2017 World Tour. Specifically, Jackson will design and create advertising campaigns to support the tour, which will stop at 300 venues. The tour is set to begin in the US in late December 2016, so family, entertainment and sports sellers should have plenty of time to secure ad revenue. Note that most of HG's media spend is deployed from January to March.

According to HG's director of brand marketing Holly Duncan, the Globetrotters are "embracing the opportunity to reimagine [the] brand as a content creator as well as a live event entertainment experience with a contemporary sports focus." 

The change comes a year after parent company Herschend Family Entertainment's CMO Eric Lent left and Monica Neal joined the Globetrotters as EVP of brand marketing and partnerships (more here).

National TV Spend: According to iSpot, HG has spent only $94,000 on national TV ads this year. The one spot - "90 Years" - ran in two-day flights throughout January, with a few more airings in February and March. The spot aired on ESPN, NBC and ESPN2 during "Harlem Globetrotters 90th Anniversary Special" and "Dateline NBC."

For the same period 2015, HG spent $683,000 to air "Memories Like This" 58 times from January to March. 

Digital Breakdown: Moat reports that HG has run 101 display ads on 193 publishers so far this year (2% mobile). Top ad destinations include fox29.com, bestofneworleans.com, ewrestlingnews.com and sfgate.com (40% placed site direct versus programmatic). HG has also run 19 high impact ads and one video ad.

For the same period 2015, the team ran 54 display and 16 high impact ads on 44 publishers (25% mobile; 62% placed site direct).
