Sellers - Qdoba started testing TV advertising for the first time last fall (research here) and found that other mediums drove better results, CEO Leonard Comma said during the Q2 earnings call. So, ad dollars will move more online and to other promotional activities since they found TV wasn't the best "go-forward strategy," he added.

This should open up direct response (DR) dollars, especially video, in Qdoba's most saturated markets, including Colorado, New Jersey, Seattle, Milwaukee and Ohio (Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland).

Additional Insight

Media Spend: Qdoba has spent about $6 million annually on measured media since 2015, according to Kantar Media. Budget is split almost 50/50 between out-of-home (OOH) and national spot radio. Most of the remainder last year, about $620,000, went to display.

Digital Breakdown: Since January, the bulk of Qdoba's display budget has supported video. Pathmatics reports that $470,000 has garnered 12.9 million video impressions, all of which have been bought site-direct. Top targeted sites include espn.go.com, youtube.com, hulu.com, screen.yahoo.com, logotv.com, disney.com and vevo.com. 

Desktop and mobile outlays have been tiny. Combined, only about $8,000 has been spent on 600,000 impressions - all site-direct too.
